Variable Speed Motors
Regal offers a range of variable speed motors in the form of vector (inverter) duty motors to meet our partners’ unique applications and specific speed requirements. These include motors used in severe-duty and explosive environments, brake motor applications, and permanent magnet motors operating with high-efficiency. Vector duty motors are used in constant torque (conveyors and machine tools) or variable torque (pumps and fans) variable speed applications within the stated speed range of the motor.
Permanent Magnet Motors
Our Marathon® and LEESON® permanent magnet ac motors continue to play a larger role in the industry due to their increased energy efficiencies. This is done by combining the power of permanent magnets with the motor windings on its field, creating a smoother performance. PMAC motors can save energy in all motor applications due to their superior efficiency and high-power density. The PMAC is versatile and can be used in many of the same applications where induction motors are used when paired with a VFD. The PMAC can be used in new applications delivering high torque at variable speeds, such as conveyors, mixers, grinders, pumps, fans, blowers, and agriculture equipment. Note that PMAC motors require variable frequency drives (VFDs) that are specially made for the PMAC design.
Explosion Proof Motors

Vector (inverter) duty motors are built to operate at lower speeds and tolerate heat generated from their performance. Integrating encoders into an induction motor provides precise speed, torque, and position control over a much wider speed range by maximizing the performance of the motor. Many motor applications require precise speed, torque, or position regulation which requires an encoder for feedback. Demanding industries in the paper, steel, textile, and material, will benefit from these designs when applied to crane, hoist, conveyor, and cutting applications.
Brake motors play an important role in maintaining consistency and safety. Our vector (inverter) duty motors are designed for use in conveyors, machine tools, cranes, hoists, and other industrial machinery requiring quick stop or holding torque.
Speed Ratio Motors
The ability to control speed in operations is vital for many commercial and industrial applications.
Inverter duty motors are paired with a VFD(Variable Frequency Drive), which converts single phase or three phase power to a direct current. That DC is inverted back into the form of three phase AC power, by switching transistors on and off at very high frequencies.
This switching can take the DC waveform and by opening and closing at certain speeds and durations can create an output waveform that mimics the sine wave that is required to drive a three phase electric motor. The output waveform is known as a Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) waveform because the waveform is created by multiple pulses of the switches at short intervals, allowing speed control induction ratings.
These motors can be found within packaging equipment, conveyors, machine tools, metal processing, and material handling applications.
