Marathon® Motor Design Team to Present Conical Motor Efficiency Findings at IEDMC

NovaMax Motor
The Marathon Motor and Texas A&M University joint design team will present their Department of Energy funded report

BELOIT, Wis., May 2, 2019 — Regal Beloit Corporation, a leading manufacturer of electric motors, electrical motion controls, power generation and power transmission components, announced the collaboration of the Marathon Motor design team and the University of Texas A&M who will present their initial findings on motor losses at the International Electric Machines & Drives Conference (IEDMC) in May.

The combined team was awarded a Department of Energy (DOE) grant in 2017 to research ways to employ high performing materials to improve the efficiency of motors without depending heavily on the usage of rare earth materials. At the core of the project is the Marathon NovaMAX® motor which utilizes innovative technology enabling it to achieve very high efficiencies.

“The motor is able to achieve a very high efficiency, up to 96% at some operating points, due to its use of grain oriented electrical steel, soft magnetic composite, and ferrite permanent magnets,” said Paul Knauer, advanced technology manager, Regal. “The combined team is looking forward to presenting their motor efficiency findings at the IEDMC conference in May.”

NovaMAX motors are ultra-efficient, electronically commutated permanent magnet motors. These energy-efficient motors are designed for use in air handling, pumps, data centers, conveyors, general industrial and other applications.
