| NBC Today Show Features 'Wall of Wind' Project Using Marathon Electric Motors |
| (Wausau, WI): “Crash Test Houses” was a segment in 2010 on NBC’s Today Show that featured the “Wall of Wind” (WOW) project based in Richburg, SC. The WOW project was developed by a consortium of some of the world’s largest insurance companies to literally “crash test” homes in simulated real life weather conditions up to a category 3 hurricane (140 MPH winds). Homes are literally blown apart to test construction materials and techniques with a goal to develop safer home designs that will stand up to severe weather and wind conditions. |
| As part of the structure to supply the high winds, Marathon designed and built a special 300 Horsepower medium voltage motor in collaboration with Howden Fan, who supplied the high tech fan units for the project. A total of 105 of these motor/fan assemblies are used in the WOW structure. In the Today Show segment, the banks of Marathon blue motors used in the structure are clearly seen. |
| The Marathon sales team began working on the WOW project in early 2009 and by summer a cross functional team was formed from sales, marketing, engineering, and manufacturing to help deliver the order. |
